He is the first mayor of the city who was born there, and is the son of Alaska's third congressman, Nick Begich. Begich's parents first came to the state in 1957 as teachers. After serving as the superintendent of military schools at Fort Richardson, Nick was elected to the state senate and then the US House of Representatives. While campaigning for reelection in 1972, Nick's plane disappeared over the Gulf of Alaska.
