Music for Democracy FAQ

What is Music for Democracy?
MFD is a grassroots political action committee devoted to promoting and facilitating musical events that raise public awareness of crucial issues, progressive candidates for federal office, and the importance of getting involved in the electoral process. We coordinate media efforts to inform and educate voters, provide a volunteer force to staff information tables at concerts and festivals, and employ a network of seasoned professionals with the expertise to create positive outcomes in national elections. To achieve our goals, we leverage the tools of the digital age -- including social networks, websites, viral videos and podcasts -- to inform the electorate, get out the vote, and mobilize press coverage in the service of our core values and the music community at large. We provide publicity to musicians and politicians who have signed an online MFD Pledge using press releases, interviews, and Internet resources, and we also identify and recruit new voters.
What is a Political Action Committee or PAC?
A Political Action Committee or PAC is a private group organized to promote or defeat legislation, or to help elect or defeat candidates for public office. Under the Federal Election Campaign Act, an organization becomes a PAC by receiving contributions or making expenditures in excess of $1,000 for the purpose of influencing a federal election. Individual contributions to federal PACs are limited to $5000. Corporations and unions may not contribute to federal PACs, though they may pay for administrative costs. MFD is registered with the Federal Election Commission, and is not beholden to any particular candidate or party.
